About Town &
Country

Town & Country Federal Credit Union, as we are now known, started in 1953 as St. John's South Portland Federal Credit Union. Credit unions around the state were being organized by Catholic parishioners wishing to promote thrift and family values. St. John's Federal Credit Union was started by its own Catholic parishioners in the basement of St. John's Catholic Church. At the time, the membership base included parishioners from Evans Street, South Portland to the Scarborough boundary.

As the credit union came to life, a number of parishioners of St. John's volunteered their time to collect the deposits from other fellow parish members. As collections began to grow, the volunteers felt it necessary to choose one individual to operate the credit union. As the candidates were reviewed, Raymond L. Chamberlain Jr. was chosen to manage the credit union for the single reason that he had not had children at the time and all the other volunteers had a spouse and family.

So as the story goes, Raymond Chamberlain became known as the founder of St. John's Federal Credit Union and his wife Annette "Nan" Chamberlain became an important aspect to the growth and integrity of the credit union. In their honor and respect, the Town & Country Federal Credit Union displays their pictures in the lobby of the main office. Although these two individuals are well-known for their dedication, this credit union would not have survived and prospered without the commitment and expertise from other volunteers, the Board of Directors, the Credit Committee and the Supervisory Committee.

As the credit union grew in deposit base, so did the location of the credit union. From the basement of the church, to the Chamberlain's home, to the purchase of the neighborhood ice cream parlor to the final construction of the present Town & Country Federal Credit Union Main office in 1976.  Mergers of Mobil, St.Patrick's, Maine Osteopathic Employees, VFW, Bancroft & Martin, Pine Point, Lighthouse (aka Holy Cross) credit unions established a strong growth base to work from.

In 1986, the board of directors approved the name change to Town & Country Federal Credit Union.   In 1989 the credit union completed an addition to the Main office adding over 10,000 square feet.  During 1995 the credit union opened a Scarborough branch office and then in 1997 opened a second South Portland location in Millcreek.  The credit union launched one of the first credit union websites in 1997.   A Portland branch located in North Deering was opened in 2003.  And, the credit union opened its first York County branch in Saco in 2007.  All of these changes help spur our membership base to well over 20,000 strong.

Town & Country's field of membership has grown to include anyone who lives or works in Cumberland County and York County, Maine.

So you see, Town & Country Federal Credit Union has a rich history of service and heritage which lives amongst all of its employees and members alike.
