Caught in the Middle: Family and Finances

According to AARP, millions of Americans balance caring for aging loved ones while also supporting children or other family members. These “sandwich generation” caregivers often face significant emotional stress, competing responsibilities, and financial pressures.

In this session, Becky Hadiaris, LCSW, Consultant with the Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s Family Caregiver Program, will explore the realities of caregiving in today’s world. Participants will gain a better understanding of the sandwich generation experience, learn practical strategies for managing caregiving demands, discover available resources and supports, and consider steps that can help families prepare for future caregiving and financial challenges.

Becky Hadiaris, LCSW, currently serves as a consultant with the Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s Compass Initiative, supporting family caregivers as they navigate the challenges of caring for a loved one. She previously served as Coordinator of SMAA’s Family Caregiver Support Program.

A licensed clinical social worker, Becky brings nearly 20 years of experience supporting older adults, individuals with disabilities, caregivers and families. Her career has included roles in long-term care, hospice, brain injury support and senior living, including work with the Brain Injury Association of America – Maine Chapter, The Wardwell Neighborhood, Beacon Hospice and Kennebunk Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Becky earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Maine at Farmington and her Master of Social Work from the University of New England. A lifelong Saco resident, she lives there with her husband and two sons and enjoys spending time by the water, reading historical fiction and watching her sons play sports.
